What are SBA, CAST, and CAA?
The Smarter Balanced Assessments (SBA) provide an annual measure of what students know and can do based on the Common Core State Standards for English language arts/literacy (ELA) and mathematics.
The California Science Test (CAST) measures students' understanding and abilities according to the California Next Generation Science Standards, covering three science domains: Earth and Space Sciences, Life Sciences, and Physical Sciences.
Alternatively, The California Alternative Assessments (CAAs) are administered to students with the most significant disabilities and whose Individualized Education Program (IEP) team has designated the use of alternate assessments.
How can I help my child?
- Explain that these assessments are tools to support learning, not something to fear.

- Encourage your child to do their best and remind them of your support.
