October 16, 2025 – El Segundo, CA
Today, the students of GBLG at Carson High School had the incredible opportunity to attend High Tech Day at AT&T in El Segundo, CA. The event, hosted in partnership with HACEMOS—AT&T’s Hispanic/Latino employee resource group—was a day filled with inspiration, learning, and powerful storytelling.
From the moment we arrived, students were warmly welcomed by the passionate staff of AT&T and HACEMOS. Their hospitality and commitment to creating a meaningful experience truly set the tone for the day. HACEMOS’s mission—to foster an environment where AT&T employees help one another succeed professionally, personally, and in their communities—was brought to life through the day’s events.
Students engaged in interactive workshops, networked with professionals, and heard from a lineup of inspiring guest speakers representing top companies such as AT&T, Disney, Mattel, and Apple. These industry leaders shared valuable insights into their career journeys, the importance of adaptability and innovation, and how students can begin preparing now for future success.
One of the most memorable moments was the keynote address by Betty Porto of Porto's Bakery. With her calm, sincere presence, Betty captivated the audience as she shared her family’s journey from Cuba to California. Her mother began baking wedding cakes in Cuba, and after immigrating to the U.S., continued baking from their two-bedroom apartment. With just $5,000, they opened their first storefront—laying the foundation for what would become a beloved Southern California bakery empire. Betty highlighted the importance of hard work, perseverance, creativity, innovation, frugality, and common sense in building a lasting legacy.
Our students walked away inspired, informed, and motivated to think bigger about their futures. They represented Carson High with pride, professionalism, and genuine curiosity.
A heartfelt thank you to AT&T, HACEMOS and all the guest speakers and volunteers who made this experience possible. We look forward to continuing to expose our students to real-world opportunities that connect their classroom learning to future career paths.
